EDINBURG, Texas — United States Border Patrol agents in Texas thwarted two smuggling attempts in the past two days, netting more than 600 pounds of marijuana.
The first seizure occurred Monday when agents at the Brownsville Border Patrol Station received a tip that a Chevrolet Tahoe was potentially loaded with narcotics. Agents located the vehicle in a retail store parking lot, and the driver fled when he noticed their presence, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release.
Agents discovered bundles totaling more than 360 pounds of marijuana in the Tahoe. The drugs have an estimated street value of about $290,000, and the driver has not been located, the agency stated.
Meanwhile, agents with the RGV Horse Patrol Unit and Rio Grande City Border Patrol Station responded to suspicious activity near Garciasville, Texas, in the early morning hours Tuesday. Several subjects were observed carrying bundles, which they immediately dropped upon detection and fled, the news release stated.
Three suspected drug smugglers were arrested in the surrounding area, and five bundles containing more than 240 pounds of marijuana were seized. The estimated street value of the drugs is about $195,000, according to the agency.
