John and Carol Forestieri took their cat of 10 years, Buddy, to the veterinarian for a minor surgery Feb. 8, when the cat escaped from the cage in the back of the car, WCBS reported.

“The door was slightly open and he just pushed through and — gone,” John Forestieri said.

They both ran after the cat, which ran into the woods nearby, but he eventually disappeared in the distance.

Recently, at 4 a.m. John heard scratching at the back door. Buddy had returned.

“At first I thought I was dreaming ‘cause I had been dreaming about him. I knew it was him without even seeing him, it was the same scratch and he did give a cry,” Forestieri said.

Buddy’s veterinarian said cats have an innate compass-like instinct that helps them determine their location.

“More cats than dogs, they just have an instinct and they know how to get home,” Dr. Robert Pisciotta, of North Fork Animal Hospital, told WCBS reported. “We were all thrilled Buddy made it home. We were all rooting for him.”

Buddy looked a little slimmer but the Forestieris said they’re indulging him with canned food each night since his return.

“I still don’t quite believe it ‘cause I didn’t expect it, and I get choked up every time I see him,” John Forestieri said.
