New York fire officials seize nearly $15,000 worth of illegal fireworks

NEW YORK — New York fire marshals have seized nearly $15,000 worth of fireworks and charged multiple people in separate arrests as part of a crackdown on illegal sparkling devices.

New York Fire Department fire marshals have been conducting surveillance to curb the use of illegal fireworks.

On Saturday, Anthony Quezada, 28, and Hugo Figuero, 30, were found in possession of nearly $4,500 worth of illegal fireworks, investigators said. They were arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful dealing of fireworks.

On Sunday, Changur Lakram, 24, and Hooteam Yogendranauth, 46, were found in possession of nearly $4,000 worth of illegal fireworks, investigators said. They were arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful dealing of fireworks.

On Monday, Jon Yue Lee, 42, was found in possession of nearly $6,200 worth of fireworks and arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful dealing of fireworks, officials said.

Officials are responding to an increase in complaints about illegal fireworks.

There were 311 complaints about illegal fireworks from Jan. 1 to June 21, WPIX reported. There were 54 fireworks-related complaints during that same period last year.

Statewide, other agencies are also cracking down on illegal fireworks.

A woman was found with more than $2,000 worth of illegal fireworks after being pulled over during a traffic stop on Friday, New York State Police said.
